Impressionism is a light, spontaneous manner of painting which began in France as a reaction against the restrictions and conventions of the dominant Academic art. It's naturalistic landscape paintings rooted in the French Realism of Camille Corot and others. It was immensely influenced by Claude Monet's painting, 'Sunrise'. The purpose of the style is attempting to capture the impression of light in a scene.
